Fashion comes in waves. The late 1990s channeled the earthy naturalness of the sixties and seventies with the resurgence of bell bottoms and peasant skirts. Now, in the fashion world, there has been a revival of two eras: the 1980s and the 1950s. The 1980s featured bright pastel colors and metallics, popped collars and glitz. The 1950s, a time remembered for its white picket fences and declarations of 'Honey, I'm home!' hosted big, beautiful hairdos matched with charming feminine dresses. Stars such as Christina Aguilera and Dita Von Teese radiate with the sex appeal of 1950s pinups. Their appearance, however, would be incomplete without their Rockabilly hairstyles.
Rockabilly is a reference to the beginning of rock music in the late 1930s, and continuing on through the 1940s and 1950s. Now people who like Rockabilly favor the rock music from the period as well as the cars, and of course, the rockabilly hairstyles. There are two men's rockabilly hairstyles that reign supreme: the pompadour and the flattop. The pompadour features a haircut that has short sides and a proportionately longer back with a large tuft of hair on the top. These rockabilly hairstyles have been immortalized by the T-Birds and Danny Zucco in Grease. The flattop's cut is short: about an inch in length. The people who rock these rockabilly hairstyles use pomade or wax to make the 'do spiky or the to give the signature flat look.
For women, there are more options for rockabilly hairstyles. The most popular rockabilly hairstyles mirror that of pinup goddess Bettie Page. This look involves bangs that are straight and cut across the forehead while the rest of the hair is in long, soft waves. The second rockabilly hairstyle is medium length and layered. At the top of the head, the hair is about five to six inches in length, at the sides it is approximately three to four inches, and it is four to five inches at the crown area. The style necessitates a curling iron, or more commonly, rollers or perm, because the rockabilly hairstyle is full of body. To style this 'do, women create volume at the top of the head, and create waves and curls as the rockabilly hairstyle descends.
These hairstyles can be accessorized with flowers and makeup art. To create the sensuous Marilyn Monroe look, makeup should be simple. A light, skin-colored eye shadow helps lashes pop. For people with short or thin eyelashes, false lashes create the Betty- Boop illusion. The essential part of the Rockabilly makeup is bright red lipstick. The lipstick juxtaposes the pale skin and teeth and adds sexy pizazz.
